Brown has also spent significant time with 'Dogs Trust', an international dog welfare charity in which Brown devoted time to in the US and New Zealand.
Inspired by what she had learned of how dogs can and should be, Brown left her sales and marketing job almost ten years ago, and achieved her dog psychology certification in 2004. She brought her knowledge back to the UK and started her canine consultancy business in August of 2008, calling her business Canine Angel.
From her experience and research, she has learned how to truly understand a dog and help both pet and owner through a canines' behavioral and health problems. Brown specializes on working with dogs with special needs and dogs with fear-based aggression problems. She also works with dogs that have shyness, nervousness, and phobias. Apart from all this, Brown fosters traumatized and rescued dogs.
More importantly, however, Brown is an advocate of good dog nutrition. She promotes and practices the raw food diet for dogs, believing that dogs on this diet are physically and emotionally healthier than their kibble fed counterparts. In a recent interview, Brown stated:

“In today’s modern society, we have been led to believe that feeding commercial pet food, in a bowl, to our dog is the best diet we can provide for them. However, during my 10 years in practice as a dog psychologist, I have witnessed the many health and behavior problems such a diet can lead to. When we invite a dog into our home, we are inviting the closest descendant to the wolf into our care and that comes with huge responsibility. It is our job as the dog’s pack leader to provide the very best diet, nutrition and care that we can. The canine species are domesticated carnivores, they are animals that still display hunting and scavenging instincts which need to be fulfilled in order for them to lead a balanced and happy life. Mother Nature designed our dogs with a set of teeth that can rip, tear, shred, chomp and crunch raw meaty bones with ease. Their digestive systems contain low PH levels which means they have much stronger stomach acids that can break down and digest raw food. Cooked processed pet foods contain large amounts of grains and cereals which the dog finds very hard to digest and can cause a whole host of health problems and allergies. Most of the nutritional content is lost by the time it is packaged and reaches the shelves. Not to mention the chemical preservatives and sugars added to these foods, all of which can play havoc with your dog’s general health. Providing our pet dogs with Raw Meaty Bones every day, supplemented with other raw foods such as small quantities of vegetable and fruit matter, fulfills their needs on a mental, emotional and psychical level. I always advise my clients to research and study the raw food diet before embarking on it, so as to ensure they are fully aware of what to look for and what to avoid. The Going RAWR guide is written exactly for this purpose and contains all the nutritional information and advice about how to feed the raw food diet safely and effectively. Feeding your dog the raw food diet is surprisingly very simple and cost effective and produces results that far outweigh anything that the commercial dry and wet pet food diet can achieve.” (Nikki Brown, online interview, August 4, 2010) |
Nikki Brown's Consultancy and Classes
Nikki Brown runs Pack Leadership Classes in the midlands area, to teach pet owners the basics of dog psychology. She believes that conventional dog training is outdated and incomplete; not being able to address the issues dogs face with their owners on a daily basis. By practicing voiceless communication and pack leadership training, which bridges the language barrier between owner and pet, Brown is able to address what is lacking in conventional training, and establish lasting lines of communication with a dog.
One of her strongest beliefs is teaching owners to be the pack leader with their dog. Dogs are pack animals that require a pack hierarchy system, with rules, limitations, and boundaries. Teaching owners how to truly understand their pets and take the pack lead results in a happy and stress free life for both owner and pet. It also gives pets an understanding of what their proper role is in a family. When a dog respects its owner as its leader, problems such as begging, barking, aggression, and disobedience go away.
Specifically, Brown offers courses in:
- Canine Behavior Therapy
- Dog & Puppy Training
- Rescue Dog Rehabilitation
- Animal Communicating or Whispering
- Natural Treatments for Pets including diet and nutrition
- Pet Bereavement
She also offers workshops and gives seminars in Pack Leader Training.
