Low Carb Dog Food

All food is composed of molecules which have different properties. These various characteristics do different things or have different purposes. Depending on what your body needs, you can eat different types of food in order to achieve certain goals. For example, if you need amino acids of essential fatty acids, you would eat protein; if you needed vitamin C, you would eat citrus fruits; and if you needed energy or sugar, you would eat carbohydrates.

Though humans need carbohydrates daily, and in fact it is the largest portion of the human food pyramid, dogs do not need as much. Dogs need a low carb dog food diet. Unlike humans, their diet should only be composed of 25% carbohydrates. This is because excessive carbohydrates are not good for them.

Our dogs need a low carb dog food diet because their bodies do not process carbohydrates the way humans do. Where humans turn carbohydrates into energy (glucose), dogs do the same but at a less efficient level. Plus, a dog's digestive system has the ability of turning protein into glucose, which means it doesn't rely on the consumption of carbohydrates for energy.

The truth is that carbohydrates are not natural for a dog to consume. In the wild, a dog would have had very little access to carbohydrates, so they really wouldn't have eaten it. Studies and statistics have found that dogs who are not on a low carb dog food diet have bad weight control, and already have or are at high risk for acquiring diabetes. This is because of the amount of sugar found in carbohydrates that becomes trapped in your dog's system.

Unfortunately for most dogs, the food we have been giving them would never have been a part of a low carb dog food diet. Most of the dry commercial pet foods that are easily accessible or available use carbohydrates in order to add structure, texture, and form to their food. These products need carbohydrates, and each serving of this type of pet food is composed of 70% carbohydrates. That makes it a diet that is not ideal for any pet.

So what should you do? Feed raw! Feeding raw dog food will naturally follow a low carb dog food diet because you will be feeding you dog meat, which means it will be getting mostly protein, as it should. Though they do get carbohydrates, they will be getting these from fruit and vegetables, and not in large amounts. What's more is that their sources for carbohydrates are sources for other nutrients too. This makes their diet better balanced!

If you feed raw food from the start, you will not have to worry about your pet's health when it comes to excessive carbohydrates. You can completely prevent the onslaught of diabetes (and for dogs that already have diabetes, you can help “cure” them with raw feeding), and you keep your dog better hydrated because of all the natural water found in raw dog food. Remember, raw feeding is the most natural raw dog food diet, and is the kind of diet your dog would have received from nature. Make the change towards raw feeding today!
