Reasons Behind Dog Food Aggression
You and your furry best friend probably get along just well in almost everything you two do. Be it taking walks down the park, jogging, watching television or whatever it is you guys are into. But when it comes to mealtime, your hairy little buddy turns into a savage beast. Try petting the pooch while he's eating and it'll flash its razor-sharp fangs at you. No, it isn't him showing appreciation for the chow given; it's his way of telling you to get lost before he sinks his teeth into your behind. In other words, it's a sign of dog food aggression.
Having said that, there can be several reasons as to why your lovable pet is acting up like this, but I'll only be stating the 4 most probable causes for such behavior. With that said, here's the first motive: he views himself as the "leader" or alpha-dog. To him, he's the master and commander of the household, and you're just his pet. This is due to your lack of authority when it comes to discipline and every other aspect in both of your lives. If your pet snarls and barks at you when you go anywhere near him during mealtime, it's to be taken a sign of his disrespect for you.
Another common cause for dog food aggression is his desperation for dog food. You may have been feeding him at irregular times, which leaves him guessing when the next meal is going to be served. Therefore, it'll do almost anything to protect its grub from anybody, which of course includes you.
Your barker viewing you as somebody that'll take its rations is considered to be another major cause for hostility. He doesn't recognize the fact that you're the guy that works his butt off to put something decent on his plate, nor does he appreciate it either. And the last cause for this violent behavior is his inability to realize that what he's doing in unacceptable.
This type of behavioral defect can happen to any pet, no matter how loving you are towards it. Do not make the mistake of thinking that it's cute or funny when the ingrate starts acting up on you again. It's important that you let your furry buddy recognize that you're the leader of the pack. In every man and dog relationship, knowing one's place is essential. You as the superior of the two must take the necessary actions to maintain order. However, never result to beating the poor doggy – this will work against you. Dogs have the tendency of becoming more aggressive when subjected to physical pain, which pretty much defeats the purpose of trying to rid him of dog food aggression.
